Mega Drive 2 Scart Lead (Continued)

If you can, find something to hold the 9 pin mini-din plug for you, if you haven't' got a set of helping hands, then improvise, don't use anything that doesn't like getting hot, as the pins will get hot during soldering.  With the socket secured, melt a tiny bit of solder onto each of the pins, ready to solder the wires into place (you can ignore pins 5 and 6, they are not used).

Din pins tinned

BEFORE you do any soldering of wires, make sure you slide the plastic part of the plug down over the cable, ready for re-assembly later on.

Make sure you put this on before soldering

Now simply follow the table on the previous page, and solder the correct coloured wire to the correct pin.  Simply press the soldering iron onto the pin, when the solder inside melts, push the wire into place (very easy if you tinned the wires first).  Work around soldering the rest of the wires.  Because of the small size of the pins, make sure you haven't used too much solder, as it may join 2 or more pins together causing a short.  You could wrap a bit of insulation tape around the wires and the pins, to make sure that none of the pins/solder touch the outer shielding once assembled.

Started soldering the wires All wires soldered

Now very gently push the pins into the metal barrel from the rear of the barrel, this isn't too difficult if you use a very small screwdriver to push the pins from behind (make sure you push the plastic though, not the pins, as you may bend them).

Pins slide into barrel

Now it's time to solder the shielding/ground wire, look at the picture below, trim the wire to the right length and solder it to this little tab sticking out.  Although not shown here, you could feed the wire through the hole, then solder it to the underside of the tab, this will make a very strong join.

Solder the ground wire to the barrel

You may want to test your cable before you fully assemble it.  If it works okay then put the plastic surround of the barrel in place, then slide the plastic plug over the barrel.  You may have to push this very hard!

mmmonkey first found the pin layout for this cable over on Mike Gordon's website, so credit must go to him.
